Simultaneous interpreting and other interpretation modes

Interpreting is a translation process occurring verbally, to maintain communication between people who speak different languages. Interpretation is required in many situation along the course of our daily life – in everyday use, and in business environment, where written translations would not suffice: legal proceedings, negotiations, conferences, meetings and consultations. Our translation agency offers a variety of interpretation services. In order to ensure success of your business meeting, conference or event and proper involvement of all participants thereof, we offer consecutive and simultaneous interpreting services. If required, we can provide interpretation over the phone or Skype, and our interpreters can be assigned to work on international business trips or meet foreign partner delegations in Latvia. Apart from that, our professional and highly qualified interpreters perform film dubbing. Interpreting is crucial for maintaining mutual understanding and cross-cultural communication in different languages and different situations. Its goal is to enable the audience in attendance to maintain verbal communication in different languages and understand each other in a clear and unambiguous manner, which requires considerable interpretation experience. We therefore recommend the use of our simultaneous interpreting services: our simultaneous interpretation specialists have been thoroughly selected to work across a variety of areas in accordance with international standards, also in terms of excellent reaction and formidable concentration abilities, which are required in order for interpretation to be prompt and cohesive.

There are different interpreting methods and situations where each of those is most appropriate

Simultaneous interpreting

An interpreter listens to the speaker and interprets whatever is being said to the required language at once, allowing the audience to understand the speech in real time. This service is frequently used at conferences, large meetings and international events.

Consecutive interpreting

The speaker says several phrases or sentence groups and pauses to allow the interpreter to interpret what has just been said. This is a method often used to facilitate negotiations, business meetings or legal proceedings.

Interpreting in hospitality and tourism

An interpreter accompanies a group of visitors or tourists and provides interpreting services to facilitate understanding and communication between the tourists and their guide.

Interpreting or simultaneous interpreting?

Frequently used as synonyms describing the same type of verbal translation work, these two terms do in fact have certain context-related differences. Detailed explanations for both terms would be as follows:

  • Interpreting - is a broader concept referring to interpretation of any kind, without narrowing the meaning down to a specific method or situation. Therefore, "interpreting" can mean both simultaneous and consecutive or any other interpreting method. This is a comprehensive term that can refer to any kind of verbal language transformations.

  • Simultaneous interpreting is a more distinct concept explicitly addressing a specific type of interpretation. This method implies a simultaneous interpreter listens to the speaker and interprets the speech for the audience at once. Simultaneous interpreting is often used at conferences, international events and other situations requiring real-time interpretation.

Therefore, even though "simultaneous interpreting" is, in fact, within the scope of the "interpreting" concept, the latter does not necessarily imply that interpretation is done in simultaneous mode. The difference is semantic to an extent and depends on the context within which the respective term is used. It is important to realise here that both processes still share the same objective, that is, to facilitate language understanding in the course of verbal communication.
